World Duathlons 2014

June 3, 2014 Santi Brage

I drove into Pontevedra with our mum as the sun was rising over the old town with the Rio curving around it. What a beautiful sight, we knew it would be a good day.

The race started at 8.30am from the sports stadium and we arrived to see hundreds of bikes racked up in the transition area.

We positioned ourselves outside the stadium to see Jav in the first 5k run. The race starts and suddenly there are some of the best in the world running past us including Jav in the middle of the pack.

The run is through the old town which is picturesque but difficult. Jav arrives back in the stadium 18 minutes later to get onto his bike. The bike course climbs up to 400 metres. However it isn't a good course for Jav since he isn't too good going downhill and was overtaken by a number of people.

As the heat starts to rise Jav is back to give all he has on the last 2.5k run. We are at the finishing line to cheer him home as he sprints in.

Jav comes in at 14th and 5th out of the many GB entries. A job well done. But to complete in his first World championship in Galicia where the family are from was truly emotional. Of course we spent the evening drinking and eating the best that Galicia can offer.
